To mark its tenth anniversary, the For the Fun of It theatre company will be performing its revival of Pedro Calderón de la Barca's auto sacramental in the Green Hall at Teatros del Canal from 18 to 21 September.
In this production, the Author (a reflection of God, director and producer of the world) suggests that the World should represent human life on Earth. A Baroque metaphor is created and elevated to its maximum power: man as an actor on a cosmic stage.
Considered by many to be the great playwright of Catholicism, Calderón achieved a synthesis of the Christian doctrine and an in-depth reflection on human freedom, one of the great Baroque themes. The production not only recovers the original title and structure of the auto sacramental, but also offers a carefully designed version with ancient music, philosophical questioning and a staging that turns its back on historicism and cynicism to embrace the transcendent.
Far from being confined to a museum-like vision, the show incorporates a renewed "Bible of the Poor”, a visual tool inspired by ancient medieval religious representations to facilitate the piece’s symbolic and spiritual understanding.
Furthermore, for those who want to go beyond the aesthetic experience, the creators suggest a dual exercise: comparing Calderón with Descartes and his Discourse on Method and with Thornton Wilder in Our Town, two visions of man facing life, reason and death. It is an invitation from the stage to think about who we are, why we act and what role we play in this great theatre of the world.
