The Teatros del Canal and various stages across the Madrid region will host the twentieth edition of the Suma Flamenca Festival from 14 October to 2 November under the theme of Tradition & Innovativeness . This special edition will host 46 shows, including nineteen world premières and sixteen premières in Madrid.
Suma Flamenca has become one of the most important flamenco festivals worldwide. In addition to making way for the leading artists of this international art, it has presented more than 200 young artists playing the guitar, singing and dancing, sponsored by the great flamenco figures.
The Teatros del Canal are the nerve centre of the festival, although the programme will also be held at other venues, such as the Athenaeum of Madrid , Teatro de la Abadía and the Paco Rabal and Pilar Miró cultural centres in Vallecas. This year, it will also be extended to three municipalities within the Community: San Lorenzo de El Escorial (Carlos III Royal Colliseum), La Cabrera (Sierra Norte County Centre for Humanities) and Rascafría (El Paular Royal Monastery).
49 shows will be held at these venues, with nineteen world premières and sixteen premières in Madrid. Flamenco dancers will reveal the research and purification process in the roots and in the innovativeness of their creations. Olga Pericet, Sara Calero, Begoña Castro, Manuel Liñán, Rafaela Carrasco, José Maya, Paloma Fantova, Karime Amaya, Alba Heredia and Kelian Jiménez will be present.
The song recitals in this 20th edition will be performed by Mayte Martín, José Mercé, Angeles Toledano, Arcángel, Sebastián Cruz, Al-Blanco & El Peli, Teresa Hernández, Guadiana, Gregorio Moya, El Pele, David Palomar, Jesús Méndez, David Carpio, María Toledo, David de Jacoba, Roberto Lorente, Filo de los Patios, Esperanza Fernández, Antonio Reyes, La Macanita and Sandra Carrasco who will be performing with David de Arahal and Los Mellis at the permanent book fair in Madrid, which is colloquially known as Cuesta de Moyano and is celebrating its centenary this year.
The concert guitar speciality will be represented by artists such as Alejandro Hurtado, Salvador Gutiérrez, Pino Losada, El Amir, Daniel Casares, Oscar Herrero, Andrea Salcedo and Juan Carmona with his Gospel Flamenco .
Other instrumentalists in concert can also be heard, such as the pianists Andrés Barrios with From Utrera to Chamberí and Dorantes with his Tribute to Scarlatti , and El Trío with Benavent, Di Geraldo and Pardo , which is celebrating its 25th anniversary. José el Marqués , with his Flamenco Violoncello , will be performing at the El Paular Monastery in Rascafría.
Several special galas have also been organised, such as Alegro Soleá by Enrique Morente and Antonio Robledo, performed by the flamenco singer El Turry, the pianist Juan Carlos Garballo and the Community of Madrid Orchestra, conducted by Manuel Busto; Vengo de mi Extremadura with Miguel and Juan Vargas, La Kaita and Alejandro Vega at the Paco Rabal Cultural Centre in Vallecas; and the children's show Flamenco Kids by José Luis Montón which will be held at the Pilar Miró Cultural Centre.
As a prelude to Suma Flamenca, the Suma Flamenca Joven series will be held in the Green Hall at the Teatros del Canal in the middle of September. It will include an exhibition of guitar concert players, flamenco singers and dancers under the age of 30.
