The opera company L'Operamore will present the summer season of Zarzuela in La Latina at the Teatro La Latina from 22 July to 6 September, from Wednesday to Sunday. This latest edition offers the chance to relive the most traditional Madrid and become immersed in the popular zarzuelas, such as La verbena de la Paloma, Luisa Fernanda, La Tabernera del Puerto and El barberillo de Lavapiés, among others, accompanied by a live orchestra.
The Madrid theatre brings together eight major titles within an incomparable framework that will take spectators to Madrid of 1800, as well as the festivities of San Lorenzo, San Cayetano and La Paloma from the stage in Plaza de la Cebada.
The programme kicks off with a performance of La canción del olvido, directed by Marco Moncloa and conducted by Javier Corcuera / Montserrat Font. Set in the fictional city of Sorrentinos, Naples, in 1799, this zarzuela tells the story of Rosina, a cunning princess, and Leonello, a captain who is in love with the courtesan, Flora. Upon learning of Leonello’s romantic plans, Rosina devises an ingenious scheme with the help of the musician, Toribio, who pretends to be a prince to seduce Flora and distract the captain.
The series continues with popular works such as La Gran Vía, a zarzuela in one act with five scenes and music by Federico Chueca and Joaquín Valverde and the libretto by Felipe Pérez y González; La Revoltosa, a lyrical sainete in one act, with the libretto by José López Silva and Carlos Fernández Shaw, and music composed by Ruperto Chapí; La Verbena de la Paloma with the libretto by Ricardo de la Vega and music by Tomás Bretón; El Barberillo de Lavapiés with music by Francisco Asenjo Barbieri; and Luisa Fernanda, a lyrical comedy in three acts, by Federico Moreno Torroba.
The programme will draw to a close in September with the performance of La Tabernera del Puerto with music by Pablo Sorozábal and the libretto by Federico Romero Sarachaga; and La Traviata with music by Giuseppe Verdi and conducted by Javier Corcuera.
