The Community of Madrid and Teatros del Canal have organised a tribute to the Corral de la Morería, the world’s most iconic flamenco house, from 16 to 31 January in the Sala de Cristal (Crystal Hall), to mark its 70th anniversary.
There will be a series of six shows featuring some of today’s leading flamenco artists. The programme will kick off on 16 January with Ana Morales, followed the next day by Belén López. On 23 January, it will be the turn of María Moreno and Joaquín Grilo will be performing on 24 January. The series will be brought to a close by Marco Flores on 30 January and David Coria on 31 January.
Founded in Madrid in1956 by Manuel del Rey, the Corral de la Morería has established itself as the world’s most prestigious and oldest functioning flamenco house. Great legends of the flamenco art have performed on its stage, such as Antonio Gades and Paco de Lucía, as well as Blanca del Rey, its current artistic director. Considered to be the “cathedral of flamenco”, it has been named the World’s Best Flamenco House and appears in international guides, such as 1,000 places to see before you die. It has also attracted well known people from culture, politics and film from all over the world, becoming a cultural icon in Spain.
Beyond its artistic value, the Corral de la Morería has revamped itself by combining flamenco with haute cuisine. Since 2016, it has been the only flamenco house with a Michelin Star, and it also boasts three Repsol Stars and a National Gastronomy Award. This fusion of tradition and avant-garde turns it into a space in which the ancestral power of flamenco coexists with a first-class gastronomic experience, confirming its position as a reference in Spanish culture.
