The new 2025-26 season at the Teatro Real kicks off with the performance of the penultimate opera by Verdi, Othello, one of the great lyric masterpieces, which can be seen on 19, 20, 22, 23, 25, 26, 28 and 29 September and 2, 3, 5 and 6 October. This production by David Alden returns to the theatre with a cast featuring the great voices of Brian Jadge, Asmik Grigorian, Jorge de León and Maria Agresta, among others.
With its libretto by Arrigo Boito and music by Guiseppe Verdi, the director David Alden presents the great lyric drama written by William Shakespeare, Othello. It is a distinguished production with the participation of the Teatro Real Choir and Orchestra and the Young Singers from the Community of Madrid Youth Orchestra and Choir.
Othello, a Moorish general serving the Republic of Venice and governor of Cyprus, returns to the country's capital after defeating the Ottoman Empire. However, once there, the evil Iago comes up with a plan to discredit his comrade-in-arms, Cassio, who has recently risen up the ranks due to his military successes.
Iago asks Cassio to speak to Desdemona, Othello's wife, to get her to intercede with her husband on his behalf. This conversation sparks Othello's jealousy, but the false evidence Iago presents to him about her infidelity makes him unable to contain his desire for revenge.
