The Excelentia Foundation presents the traditional concert to see out the year at the Teatro Real on 31 December. It is a recital with Beethoven's Ninth Symphony as the main theme and a selection of the best Spanish music with pieces performed by the Santa Cecilia Classical Orchestra and the Excelentia Choral Society of Madrid.
Created between 1822 and 1824, the Ninth Symphony is Ludwig van Beethoven's last complete composition. It is one of the most popular pieces in the history of music and its last movement is a very unusual choral finale for that time. This uniqueness has turned it into a symbol of freedom and, therefore, an adaptation by Herbert von Karajan was chosen to be the hymn of the European Union in 1972.
The Santa Cecilia Classic Orchestra is the private group of the Excelentia Foundation. It was created in 2002 and is made up of around 150 musicians. The orchestra has been conducted by illustrious maestros, such as Alexander Polyanichko, Michail Jurowski, Henrik Schaefer, Andrés Cárdenes, Alan Burivayev or Donato Cabrera, among many others. It is one of the best orchestras in Europe in its genre and usually gives around 30 concerts each season.
On this occasion, the Santa Cecilia Classic Orchestra is accompanied on stage by the Excelentia Choral Society of Madrid, conducted by Kynan Johns and with performances by the soprano Tatiana Trenogina, the mezzo-soprano Olga Syniakova, the tenor Luis Gomes and the bass, David Cervera.
