From 16 to 18 January, the Sala Roja Concha Velasco at the Teatros del Canal will host the world première of the latest project by the dancer and choreographer, Carlos Rodríguez, which pays tribute to one of the most important flamenco houses, the Corral de la Morería, which is celebrating its 70th anniversary.
This project, which is the second production by the Carlos Rodríguez Ballet Flamenco Company, brings together a cast of leading dancers and musicians who are trained in different disciplines in order to showcase the wealth and versatility of the new generations of Spanish dance and flamenco performers.
The conceptual production is inspired by the history of the legendary Madrid flamenco house. Through choreography and flamenco scenes, iconic moments from the flamenco house are recreated and the memory of leading figures who have performed on its stage is evoked, consolidating the Corral de la Morería as a global cultural and artistic reference. The show seeks to pay tribute to an institution that has marked the direction of flamenco and continues to be an essential space for creation and tradition.
Born in Madrid in 1975, Carlos Rodríguez is a dancer and choreographer who is specialised in Spanish dance and flamenco. He began his training as a young boy and got through to the final of the exams to enter the Spanish National Ballet at the age of 13, which marked the start of a prolific career. He has worked as a soloist in leading companies, such as the Ballet Teatro Español under the orders of Rafael Aguilar, the Spanish Ballet in Madrid or the Zambra Ballet.
In 1995, he co-founded the pioneering New Spanish Ballet with Ángel Rojas, which later changed its name to Rojas y Rodríguez Company, with which he has explored flamenco that moves away from pure tradition, combining it with other contemporary disciplines. He has created and premièred shows for decades, such as Infierno S.L., Sangre Flamenca, Flamenco Directo, Alma, Cambio de Tercio and Romeo and Juliet, among others. He has won prestigious awards such as the Community of Madrid Medal for the Arts, the Villa de Madrid Award for Best Dance Performer and the Pilar López Award.
