On 1 November, the Red Hall (Sala Roja Concha Velasco) at Teatros del Canal is hosting the world première of the show, Lejano, by the prestigious gypsy dancer, José Maya. It forms part of the latest edition of the Suma Flamenca Festival and the artist is accompanied on stage by the vocals of Ismael "El Bola", José "El Calli" and Delia Membrive.
As the nephew of Rafael Romero "El Gallina" and Fernanda Romero, the artist started to dance professionally at the age of nine, sharing the billboard at the Teatro Albéniz in Madrid with Antonio Canales, Juan Ramírez and Joaquín Grilo. At the age of thirteen, he joined the El Güito and Manolete companies, with whom he toured Spain and Portugal. In 2007, he became a member of the sextet of the guitar maestro, Tomatito.
He has performed as opening dancer with his own show at concerts of international stars, such as Marc Anthony, Beyoncé, Björk or Juan Luis Guerra, performing at the Palacio de los Deportes in Madrid, at the Palau Sant Jordi in Barcelona or the Vistalegre Bullring.
In 2011, he presented Maya, touring the United States and Canada at the Alburquerque festivals, at the Theater Skirball Center in New York, Théâtre Marines Memorial in San Francisco and at the Montreal International Percussion Festival, among others. He also formed part of the Carmen Amaya tribute show along with Pastora Galván, Karime Amaya and Gema Moneo.
