For the eighth consecutive year, the best recent and unreleased films in Madrid will once again take over the Plaza de Matadero Madrid. On Thursday to Sunday evenings from 3 to 27 July, the square becomes the summer CinePlaza, a space to enjoy the magic of the big screen outdoors with a programme that includes two film-concerts by leading Spanish groups, two films with live commentary and a selection of twelve titles screened in Original Version with Spanish Subtitles.
The 2025 edition is presented under the title Superstars 2, and the twelve titles being screened this year include films that explore the intersection between music and film from different perspectives, with great musicals from the 1980s and the 21st century, documentaries on black music and intimate portraits of artists.
The scriptwriter, Paloma Rando will provide live commentary on Cabaret (Bob Fosse, 1972), the musical starring Liza Minnelli. Lidia García will provide verbal commentary on the Spanish musical comedy, The Balcony of the Moon (Luis Saslavsky, 1962).
The billboard is open to critical, rebellious and poetic views, highlighting film-concerts featuring Hidrogenesse, presenting an ad hoc proposal with songs that showcase their cinematic vein, and Joe Crepúsculo, who will perform versions of mythical films from quinqui film.
The screenings will include titles like Absolute Beginners (Julien Temple, 1986), a musical adaptation of the novel by Colin MacInnes, starring David Bowie and set in London in the late 1950s. The story presents a young photographer who is immersed in the world of jazz and fashion as he faces racial tension and searches for love.
The audience will also be able to enjoy Sid and Nancy (Alex Cox, 1986). It is a film acclaimed for the performance of the actor Gary Oldman, but it was received with controversy by former members of the group. However, over time, it has become an essential portrait of the end of punk and the building of the myth. In Xanadu (Robert Greenwald, 1980), an extravagant mix of mythological fantasy, disco music and roller-skating is presented and was conceived as a vehicle to consolidate Olivia Newton-John's stardom following the success of Grease (1978), but it proved to be a major failure at the box-office and with critics.
Over time, however, it has become a cult film for its kitsch aesthetics.
