The Chinese New Year festival, with over 4,000 years of history, begins with the new moon and bids farewell to winter, which is why it’s also known as the "Spring Festival". In 2026, starting on 17 February, we’ll be celebrating the Year of the Horse, and as in previous years, a packed programme of activities is being planned to mark the occasion, primarily in Usera, Madrid's vibrant Chinatown.
Every year, Madrid City Council joins in the festivities with a wide range of activities for all ages and tastes. The programme, organised by the Madrid Department of Culture, Tourism and Sport and the Usera District Council, is supported by the Embassy of the People's Republic of China, Chinese associations in Usera, local artists, neighbourhood groups, Casa Asia, and the Confucius Institute of Madrid.
Two of the highlights of the annual celebrations are the fireworks display at Pradolongo Park and a DJ set in the square of the Usera District Council building. The main showstopper, however, is the Chinese New Year Parade, which brings the streets of Usera to life with magic, stunning costumes from China, giant dragons and lions, and lanterns made by children, all set to live music.
The programme is rounded off with cultural performances, exhibitions, storytelling sessions, workshops, a market, shows, the Chinese Temple Fair on Plaza de España, Madrid Spring Festival, the Spring Race and the Chinese New Year Race
