On 15, 16 and 17 October in the Concha Velasco Red Hall at Teatros del Canal, the Batsheva Dance Company will première in Spain one of the most emblematic creations by the Israeli choreographer, Ohad Naharin, and a piece that has become a reference in international contemporary dance since its debut in 2011.
Considered one of the most acclaimed titles in the company’s repertoire, the piece has earned international critical acclaim. Built around a succession of scenes (the 21 “fields” that give the production its name), the show offers a physical and emotional journey in which the dancers explore numerous forms of relationship, movement and transformation. The choreography maintains a constant tension between different planes of existence, creating a space seeped in mystery that invites spectators to discover new meanings in each performance.
The theatrical experience kicks off even before the dance starts. A constant buzz fills the hall as the spectators take their seats and once the lights have been dimmed, a single spotlight illuminates the stage. Without transition, spectators are transported to a seemingly empty space that gradually fills with moving bodies. As if participating in a ritual of hypnotic power, the dancers build a visual and sensory universe from which it is difficult to look away, confirming the evocative power of a production that remains one of the great milestones of modern dance.
The Batsheva Dance Company is one of the world’s most prestigious and influential dance companies. Founded in 1964 in Tel Aviv (Israel) by Baroness Batsheva de Rothschild and the American choreographer, Martha Graham, the company has established itself as an international reference through its constant search for new stage languages.
Since 1990, under the artistic management of the choreographer, Ohad Naharin, the company has developed its own identity based on movement of great physical and expressive intensity, closely linked to Gaga body language, a movement research method created by Naharin himself. Its repertoire combines pieces by the Israeli choreographer, along with creations by leading guest artists, including Decadance, Last Work or Naharin's Virus.
