The Jesús Carmona Company will première a flamenco dance piece that delves into the construction of personal identity on 18 and 19 October in the Sala Roja Concha Velasco at Teatros del Canal.
The piece stems from a contemporary concern: how to detect, express and communicate the dynamics of subject construction and how certain personality disorders, such as dissociative disorder, can alter them.
Far from approaching the topic from a purely theoretical perspective, Carmona sought to draw on scientific and philosophical knowledge to underpin his proposal. During the creative process, he held meetings with psychiatrists, philosophers, neuroscientists and other experts from whom he obtained valuable conceptual and emotional material. With these ideas as a basis, and under the stage management of María Cabeza de Vaca, the performance becomes a sensory exploration of the lights and shadows that make up the artistic personality.
Carmona reveals his masks and unfolds to the audience, revealing the fragility of the performer when he offers himself without filters and the strength that arises from this vulnerability. The show reflects on the creator's exposure to the gaze of others, on the protective mechanisms he develops to preserve his privacy, and on the beauty that emerges from the tension between authenticity and the alter ego.
Jesús Carmona is a dancer born in Barcelona in 1985. He has created shows such as Amator, Impetu's or 7 Balcones and he has worked as a choreographer for the Spanish National Dance Company or the Spanish National Ballet. Carmona has won several awards, such as the Spanish National Dance Award in the Creation category in 2020 and the RNE Critical Eye Award in the Dance category in 2019.
