The prestigious French director and choreographer, Angelin Preljocaj, premières in Spain a dance and ballet show that celebrates the miracle of life through requiems of several universal artists on 8 and 9 May in the Sala Roja. Concha Velasco at Teatros del Canal.
The production addresses the emotional complexity of the loss of a loved one through dance. Far from focusing solely on sorrow and grief, Preljocaj seeks to evoke a mosaic of feelings, capturing the range of emotions that arise when we face the death of someone close. The piece, inspired by composers like Verdi, Mozart, Ligeti and Fauré, uses music to illustrate both the pain and the happiness that emerges on remembering the joyful moments with the person who has died.
Throughout the production, Preljocaj explores the contradiction inherent in the grieving process: whilst death may appear to be a point of no return, a celebration of life appears in thoughts and memory, something that is shown in the movements of the dancers. Life is not just a path of suffering, but it is a miracle, an extraordinary experience that can fill us with vitality even when we are facing the end of life.
Preljocaj moves away from the traditional vision of requiem, as a solemn and sober piece to offer an interpretation that delves into the nuances of grief, memory and love in its most human side.
