As part of her European tour, the prestigious drag queen Sasha Velour will be visiting the Gran Teatro Caixabank Príncipe Pío on 9 June to present her latest show, Travesty. This is the third touring production written and directed by Velour, following on from Smoke & Mirrors (2019–2022) and The Big Reveal (2023–2025).
The global drag icon will bring her latest unipersonal drag show to Europe, following its world première at the Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company (Washington D.C.). Travesty traces the secret queer history of a specific place over time: a witch burns at the stake in a field; a clown builds a theatre; an underground gay bar rises up against the police. Meanwhile, Velour brings various characters to life through a series of spectacular lip-syncs. Partly performance, partly history and partly a call to action, Travesty will have the audience crying out.
Travesty brings together first rate collaborators and the wardrobe is by the Emmy winning Diego Montoya Studio, along with Andres Caballero, Jazzmint Dash, Pierretta Viktori and Gloria Swansong. Sound design is by Palmer Hefferan, nominated for a Tony Award; and the stage design/lighting/screening is by Cosette “Ettie” Pin.
Sasha Velour is the stage name of Alexander Hedges Steinberg, a famous American drag queen and fashion designer. She won the ninth season of the famous TV show, RuPaul’s Drag Race in 2017 and is renowned for her unique style, in which she incorporates elements of visual art, theatre and fashion. She has also had an outstanding career in the drag industry, touring and participating in diverse creative projects.
Beyond her work on the drag scene, Sasha Velour is an activist and advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, using her popularity to fight for inclusion and equality for the gay community.
This latest show comes after a series of hits, such as the launch of her best-seller book, The Big Reveal, An Illustrated Manifesto of Drag (Harpers) in 2023, the winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race became the presenter of the HBO programme, We’re Here, a judge on the first televised Drag King of the World competition, King of Drag (Revry), and host of the official Werq the World Drag Race tour on three continents, and she has taken the stage adaptation of her book, The Big Reveal to prestigious theatres.
