The Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum will present the first monographic exhibition by Anna Weyant in Madrid from 15 July to 12 October, bringing together more than twenty paintings. This exhibition, which forms part of the exhibition programme based on the Blanca and Borja Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection, is an excellent opportunity to discover her pictorial language and her particular visual universe.
Known for her paintings featuring young women, Anna Weyant (Calgary, 1995) captures a world that swings between the dreamlike and the everyday in a deeply personal figurative style, inspired by the history of art. Her iconography evokes contemporary American popular culture and modernist movements between the wars, including surrealism.
Many of her paintings feature women immersed in dark and melancholic scenes. However, far from presenting the main characters as mere symbols, Weyant observes them with great sensitivity, highlighting their idiosyncrasies and human contradictions. Therefore, she succeeds in portraying authentic and endearing characters, inviting us to contemplate details from their inner world.
Her paintings also display a wealth of artistic references spanning from the Baroque to art from the first half of the 20th century, periods that are well represented in the Thyssen Museum. These paintings converse with a selection of paintings from the permanent collection, which are on display alongside them.
