The Juan March Foundation will be hosting an exhibition co-produced with the SOLO Collection from 27 February to 12 April, which will bring together two small panels painted by a follower of Bosch, along with a selection of contemporary paintings with strong surreal, metamorphic and fantasy elements, all of which were influenced by the Great Dutch painter.
The two panels, Heaven and Hell, come from a lost triptych devoted to The Last Judgement. The continuity in contemporary artists of dream imageries, such as those of Bosch, is not an isolated case. Following the death of the maestro, his meticulous inventions, moral satire, delirious imagery and black humour has become a shared tradition from the 15th century to the present day. Therefore, André Breton saw a surrealism prior to that of 20th-century Surrealism in the logic of associations and mutations.
Today, Bosch’s visions coexist with the artistic possibilities of digital tools and artificial intelligence, which are authentic metamorphosis machines that produce fantasy worlds from language, data and images to encourage play, imagination and thought.
