The Teatro Real will be hosting the performance of the monumental sacred work by Johann Sebastian Bach on 4 April, which was premièred on Good Friday 1727 and is considered by many experts to be one of the most transcendental creations in the history of music.
The score comes under the seal of the German Utopia Orchestra & Choir, conducted by Teodor Currentzis, accompanied by the countertenor Christophe Dumaux, the tenor David Fischer or the mezzosoprano Yulia Vakula, among other leading artists. The production is in German with English and Spanish subtitles.
The piece offers a profound musical narrative on the suffering and death of Christ, structured through and extraordinarily complex sound architecture. Bach combines the evangelical narration with arias with an intense emotional load and Lutheran chorales which invite spiritual reflection, building an experience that goes beyond the liturgical to become a universal drama on pain, compassion and redemption.
The libretto is based on Chapters 26 and 27 of the Gospel of Matthew in the German translation by Martin Luther, which is joined by the poetic texts by the writer Christian Friedrich Henrici, known as Picander. This combination between the biblical word, devotional poetry and music places it as one of the most accomplished expressions of Baroque religious thought.
