Something’s Going on Around Redor Inhabiting, Traversing, Reclaiming the City (1970-1975)

The Reina Sofía Museum is presenting an exhibition devoted to the projects produced by Redor, an artistic space founded in 1969 by Tino Calabuig and Alberto Corazón, from 27 June to 17 October in the Nouvel Building, Library and Documentation Centre, Space D. The exhibition brings together some of the artistic and activist initiatives that took place to reclaim the right to the city.

Redor housed a silkscreen print workshop, which produced the posters for the exhibitions and actions held there, and a gallery, whose proposals were pioneering on the Spanish art scene due to the languages and media used, such as performance, photomontage, environments or comic art.

The exhibition route kicks off with the Architecture Exhibition (1972) project by Tanis Pérez Pita, Daniel Zarza, and Rafael Zarza, which denounced the appalling living conditions and the lack of basic services in housing on the outskirts of Madrid.  Graphic Image of the Afro-American Movement (1972) is also present in the exhibition, as an example of Redor’s commitment to the fundamental rights of women and racial and ethnic minorities. In this way, they take on the city’s problems as their own in order to enter spaces marked by the repression towards the end of the Franco Regime.

Fifty years later, the exhibition presents materials that express urban conflicts and concerns that converse with ongoing civilian struggles, such as the right to housing and the public use of space.
