The María Pagés Company, led by the flamenco dancer from Seville, María Pagés, will be performing a flamenco dance show consisting of twelve choreographies that examine the multi-faceted feminine essence from 26 September to 5 October, from Friday to Sunday at the Centro Danza Matadero - CDM.
The show is a joint creation by María Pagés and El Arbi El Harti, which is stage managed by both of them whilst the latter is responsible for the texts. De Scheherezade was created and produced for the Liceu de Barcelona and the ADMAF and was inspired by the character from One Thousand and One Nights, who emanates dramaturgically from a contemporary reading of the essence of the wonderful female characters who have marked the world of universal culture.
The show explores the popular and classical musical repertoire, with a special focus on Moroccan music. De Scheherezade goes through the free and hospitable dialogue between classical, popular and flamenco music, performed by a string and percussion quartet, accompanied by an Arabic voice and two flamenco voices.
Its exploratory nature represents the continuation of Yo, Carmen, a show by Pagés that premièred in 2015. In this way, María Pagés and El Arbi El Harti delve into the empathy of women, positioning sisterhood as the foundation of a female voice that rises up to express and vindicate the multi-faceted reality of women's everyday lives.
The choreographies gather a feminine diversity that take over the action to conquer the stage in a real and symbolic way through 13 women with a strong singularity who think about the plurality of the gender they represent in choreographic and musical keys.
