The marathon—classified as a Gold Label Race by the International Athletics Federation, which is the highest level of excellence—is on the same scale as such well-known races as those in New York, London or Berlin. It also forms part of the Rock ‘n' Roll Marathon Series, the world’s biggest running circuit, and features live rock music throughout the event, a finish line festival, a parallel 10-kilometre race and another half-marathon, turning Madrid into an absolute sporting celebration. In 2024, a total of 40,000 runners from 113 countries participated in the three races, setting a record for the event. The marathon was won by Mitku Tafa (2:08:57), Ethiopia, in the men’s race and Naom Jebet (2:26:19), Kenya, in the women’s. The 47th edition will be held on 27th of April, 2025.
The race boasts one of the most beautiful routes on the international calendar: departing from Paseo de la Castellana (next to Gregorio Marañón metro station), it allows you to take in the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, the Cuatro Torres Business Area, Puerta del Sol, the Royal Palace, the Faro de Moncloa observation deck, Casa de Campo Park, Madrid Río Park and the Prado Museum, which is located alongside the finishing line on Paseo de Recoletos (between Plaza de Cibeles and Plaza de Colón). Performances by nearly 20 rock bands playing along the route and the warmth of the enthusiastic, sport-loving Madrid crowd are the icing on the race's cake.
