The event, classified as a Gold Label Race by the International Athletics Federation, which is the highest level of excellence, is on the same scale as such well known races as those in New York, London or Berlin. It also forms part of the Rock ‘n' Roll Marathon Series, the world’s biggest running circuit, and there will be live music performances on over 20 stages, a finish line festival, a parallel 10 kilometre race and another half marathon to turn Madrid into a sporting celebration. Due to the pandemic, the 2021 edition was held on 26 September, later in the year than usual, with more than 30 thousand runners from 104 countries participating in the three races. The marathon was won by two Ethiopian athletes: Gemeda (2:10:14) in the men’s race and Lemeneh (2:29:08) in the women’s. In 2022 the marathon will be held on its traditional date: the last Sunday in April which will fall on the 24th.
The race boasts one of the most beautiful routes on the international calendar, as departing from Paseo de la Castellana, it allows you to take in the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, the Cuatro Torres Business Area, Faro de Moncloa, the Casa de Campo, Madrid Río and the Prado Museum, which is located alongside the finishing line on the Paseo del Prado with Plaza de Cánovas del Castillo. The warmth of the enthusiastic, sport-loving Madrid crowd is the icing on the race's cake.
