The Belgian theatre group, tg STAN will be performing the Spanish première of a play by the German playwright, Marius von Mayenburg, who uses black humour and provocation to address contradictions in contemporary European society, on 14 and 15 November in the Sala Roja Concha Velasco at Teatros del Canal, as part of the Autumn Festival. The show will be performed in Dutch with Spanish subtitles.
Nachtland is a made-up German word that evokes a region immersed in eternal darkness. This word is the title of this unsettling and scathing piece, which offers a critical reflection on beliefs, coexistence and the various forms of indignation in today’s Europe.
The story takes place in contemporary Germany. Nicola and Philipp are clearing out the house of their recently deceased father when they find an old painting hidden in the attic. It portrays a street scene set in Vienna in the 1920s painted by Adolf Hitler. The discovery leads to an increasingly complex situation in which prejudices, interests and conflicting political stances are brought to light.
Based on this premise, Von Mayenburg creates a tale in which the characters are trapped in a web of belief and reasoning that are difficult to sustain. The production explores how convictions can be transformed when they enter into conflict with personal interests and the views of others.
tg STAN (Stop Thinking About Names) is a theatre group founded in 1989 and is regularly included in the programme of the Autumn Festival. The company returned to this festival in 2022 when it presented Infidèles, based on a text by Ingmar Bergman, and Dances for an Actress, a unique encounter between Jolente De Keersmaeker, sister of the choreographer, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, and the choreographer and dancer, Jérôme Bel.
With Nachtland, tg STAN once more opts for a performance that combines humour, reflection and confrontation to raise questions on memory, personal convictions and the way in which European society faces its past and present.
