Un Hamlet de moins

On 7 and 8 November, the Théâtre des 13 vents CDN Montpellier Company will première in Spain a show that revisits Shakespeare’s classic play to explore questions such as the power of images, playfulness, fear of being judged and the ability to forget in the Black Hall at Teatros del Canal as part of the Autumn Festival. The show will be performed in French with Spanish subtitles.

Hamlet, Horatio, Ophelia and Laertes feature in an encounter that relives their experiences of the past to build a better present and future.  The play explores different layers of meaning through the characters from Hamlet, who become figures dealing with the expectations placed on them by others. The conflict between their own decisions and external impositions serves as a starting point to reflect on memory, representation and the how power is exercised.

Théâtre des 13 vents, Centre Dramatique National de Montpellier, is a theatre company that understands the theatre as a space for confrontation and debate. The production is directed by Nathalie Garraud, who has been joint director of Théâtre des 13 vents since 2018 alongside the playwright, Olivier Saccomano, who is also responsible for the texts. They have both developed a career marked by dialogue between the theatre and contemporary thinking.  Their Spectres de l'Europe trilogy was well received at international festivals.

Garraud’s experience in Palestinian refugee camps and in international cooperation projects is combined with Saccomano’s studies as a Doctor of Philosophy. Two different paths that come together in a theatre production that uses one of the great classics of western playwrighting to raise questions about the importance of the past, identity, violence and looking towards others.
