José Maldonado premières a show in which flamenco goes beyond its traditional limits to merge with painting live, on 12 and 13 September in the Black Hall at Teatros del Campo. The show turns the stage into a space for simultaneous creation, where dance, song, guitar, percussion and visual arts enter into dialogue in a single artistic language.
The dancer’s movements cease to be merely dance and become brushstrokes, while the flamenco moaning takes on a visual dimension and the rhythm of the heel draws new shapes over the stage. Maldonado’s body acts as a living brush, projecting colour and movement onto the blank canvas.
The show presents a symbolic journey of transformation, from seed to fruit, where death and rebirth emerge as the driving forces of change. This journey culminates with the dancer’s metamorphosis into a bird, just as the flamenco house loses its initial form to gradually become an Amazonian rainforest, reinforcing the poetic and visual dimension of the production.
José Maldonado is a flamenco dancer, choreographer and visual artist born in Barcelona, who is considered to be one of the up-and-coming figures in contemporary flamenco. Trained in Spanish dance and flamenco at the Barcelona Professional Conservatory (Theatre Institute), his career has been characterised by combining flamenco with other artistic disciplines, especially painting and visual arts.
He set up his own company in 2013 and has created shows, such as Andrea, Amorente, Bodegón and Galería, whereby the latter is renowned for combining dance, live painting and audiovisual language. He won the Breakthrough Artist Award at the Jerez Festival 2019, as well as various awards at the Spanish Dance and Flamenco Choreography Competition in Madrid. In parallel to his career as a flamenco dancer, he has developed an important side as a painter, presenting exhibitions and creating works for institutions and artists from the world of flamenco.
