American choreographer Faye Driscoll and Sweden’s renowned Cullberg Ballet company are combining their artistic styles for the first time in a production that brings together 15 dancers on stage to explore perception, presence and the expressive possibilities of the body. The show makes its Spanish début on 20 and 21 November at the Sala Roja Concha Velasco auditorium of Teatros del Canal as part of the Autumn Festival.
The piece takes as its starting point a question about how we experience the world in the age of screens: at a time when so many experiences seem to be reduced or flattened into images, how can we regain a truly multidimensional perception? Driscoll translates this concept into the body and creates a performance in which proximity, posture and the gaze become the tools for constantly transforming what happens on stage.
The 15 dancers appear both separate and united at the same time, continuously forming and unravelling images. The group is transformed by small changes in position and perspective. The bodies transition from stillness to movement, from strength to collapse, and from ecstasy to tension, until they become a kind of collective organism in a state of constant change. In doing so, the choreography raises another question: how can a body assimilate that which it is unable to contain?
This offering is part of Faye Driscoll’s unique creative world, whose works straddle the line between realism and fantasy, and explore the body’s potential to create shared experiences. The American choreographer won the Grand Prix de la Danse de Montréal for Weathering in 2023 and has received other honours such as the Doris Duke Award, a fellowship from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Bessie Award and the Jacob’s Pillow Artist Award.
