The French-Senegalese choreographer and dancer, Amala Dianor will be performing a show based on the spirit of appropriation and remixing Jamaican dub from the 1960s in the Sala Roja Concha Velasco at Teatros del Canal on 28 and 29 November as part of the 43rd Autumn Festival .
The piece is inspired by Jamaican dub from the 1960s, a musical genre which came about from reggae and is characterised by its spirit of remixing and appropriation, taking this idea to the language of movement.
With hip hop roots, Dianor studied contemporary dance alongside leading figures like Georges Momboye, Françoise and Dominique Dupuy or Emanuel Gat, developing his own style that combines refined technique and street energy. Since making his debut, he has performed in shows such as Point Zero or Siguifin , whereby the latter supported the talent of West African artists.
This production is the result of a creative process that began in 2018 and has been enriched by an intense international tour. Over these years, Dianor has immersed himself in influences and experiences in countries like India, Brazil, Senegal and South Africa and he has also explored the American underground culture and attended street parties. He has also researched social media to discover and understand the latest trends in urban dance.
As a result of this artistic journey, the choreographer selected eleven dancers who are able to master styles such as voguing, pantsula, krump, waacking and new-style hip hop. On stage, they perform duets, trios or group choreographies within a space that simulates an apartment block illuminated by neon lights, creating a vibrant atmosphere reminiscent of a large dance floor. With its overwhelming energy, the evening transforms the theatre into a celebration of global hip hop and the urban culture, inviting the audience not only to watch, but to also join in the party.
