Cruz Novillo

The CentroCentro cultural space will be hosting an exhibition from 8 October to 24 January 2027 that offers a non-linear journey through the work of Cruz Novillo and includes work cycles from the mid-1960s to 2025.

Curated by Pepe Cruz-Novillo Junior and Elena Fernández Manrique, the exhibition revolves around the concepts on which Novillo developed his aesthetic and conceptual research: reflection on geometry and arithmetic’s, colour, time, sound and play.

The exhibition brings together a selection of sculptures in wood, stone and bronze. Each piece by Cruz Novillo leads to an exploration ranging from the two-dimensional to the three-dimensional and therefore works on paper, two-dimensional collages and sculptures emerge from each cycle.

This exhibition seeks to highlight the diversity and complexity of the artist’s work, connecting his current pieces with his early series. In this way, historical works such as Manipulable Structures and those that were included in his solo presentation in the Spanish Pavilion at the São Paulo Biennial in 1977, Tximparta and Acoplamiento, enter into dialogue with his recent works, such as the Twelve-Tone Diaphragm of Digits for the National Statistics Institute, one of the most significant works for public spaces, which combines mathematics, especially statistics, with colour and music from the decaphonic scale. Begun in 2007 for the building’s façade, the author of this series continued to produce pieces until 2025.

Documentary and archival material illustrating the artist’s creative process is also on display. In these models and preparatory drawings, Novillo explores the development of an idea and its variations through different scales, colours, materials and media. The exhibition also features writings, photographs and publications in display cabinets.
