On 9, 10, 11, 13 and 14 March, the Teatro Real will host the world première of a new creation by the composer, Manuel Busto, inspired by one of the most emblematic tragedies by Federico García Lorca.
The production offers a fresh interpretation of Lorca’s text, turning the poetic and symbolic intensity of a classic play that continues to move audiences due to the timeless nature of its conflicts into the opera language. The production boasts stage management by Bárbara Lluch, while Busto is the musical conductor, in a personal bid to provide the music to a dramatic universe marked by death, passion and destiny.
It seeks to delve into the ritual dimension of the play, where life and death are interwoven in a territory dominated by myths, arid landscapes and ancestral forces that pull the characters towards an inevitable fate.
The story focuses on a bride who is trapped between duty and desire. Although she is about to marry the Groom, she is still emotionally connected to Leonardo Félix, a former flame who has not been able to forget her either. The celebration is also overshadowed by the Groom’s mother, marked by the violence of the past and the feud with Félix’s family. In the middle of the wedding, the lovers decide to flee together, which turns the ceremony into a tragedy. The chase which follows leads to a final clash in which love and death merge into one of the most harrowing endings in Spanish literature.
