This large urban park opened in 2007 in neighbourhood of Piovera, in the district of Hortaleza, northeast Madrid. It recalls the visit of Pope John Paul II to Madrid in 2003 through a monolith engraved with a phrase that the pontiff dedicated to the city of Madrid. It is divided into three areas: a rest area, a thematic area, and a sports area.
The first two sections of the park, covering an area of around 10 hectares, incorporate the rest and thematic areas. The design of the rest area, known as the Garden of Sun and Water, is arranged around a square with a 4-metre sundial and surrounded by canals, planting, and paths. It combines traditionally Mediterranean species such as olive, vines, and fruit trees with other specimens from modern gardening.
The thematic area, known as the Mediterranean Gardens, is representative of the historical evolution of Mediterranean gardening. This area includes the Garden of the Middle East, the Medieval Garden, the Arab Garden, the Palm Grove, and Paradise. Water is an ever-present feature here, through streams, waterways, and pools.
The third section of the park is the sports area, which covers an area of approximately 3 hectares and includes a professional rugby field with artificial turf and 2 padel courts, as well as an ornamental strip and garden areas.
It also has children's plays areas, a dog park, and a bike path.
