Sacred Madrid Map

This map offers a tour of fourteen churches and monasteries of extraordinary historical and artistic value. Although Madrid did not have its own diocese until the 19th century, the presence of the court led to the establishment of numerous wealthy religious foundations, such as the monasteriesof Las Descalzas Reales and La Encarnación. The Collegiate Church of San Isidro once served as the chapel of the Imperial College—the main educational centre of the Spanish Golden Age—while the Church of San Jerónimo el Real (Los Jerónimos) was originally part of the former El Buen Retiro Palace complex. Several buildings are renowned for their architectural significance, such as the Pontifical Basilica of San Miguel and the Church of Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, which is the most modern on the list. Baroque and Classical styles abound, from the Monastery of Las Comendadoras de Santiago and Santa Bárbara Church to the Basilica of San Francisco el Grande. Other sites delight visitors with their hidden treasures, such as San Plácido Convent, the Church of San Antonio de los Alemanes and the Chapel of San Antonio de la Florida. The Royal Basilica of Nuestra Señora de Atocha brings the itinerary to a close.
