Parallel to Calle de Alcalá and right by Puerta del Sol, this Japanese fusion restaurant was launched in 2015 by Juan Alcaide and Pablo Álvaro, two chefs with a wealth of experience in leading Japanese restaurants in Madrid, such as Kabuki. Awarded two Suns in the Repsol Guide, it moved to its current premises in 2023.
Umiko is spread over 800 m2 divided into different areas: an open show-cooking area and spectacular bar for twelve people, the entrance with a bar and high tables, and an area for private events. The interior design, based on the traditional Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi, makes reference to a vision of the world centred on the acceptance of fleeting beauty, imperfect and incomplete. It features a hypercolourist mural behind the bar, created by urban artist Okuda San Miguel, along with one of his sculptures by the entrance to the restaurant opposite the bar.
The menu at Umiko is based on Japanese cuisine fused with flavours from other parts of the world, particularly Peru, China, Thailand, Mexico and Madrid. They specialise in casual dining with delicious dishes that are constantly changing in line with the seasons to continually amaze diners. The cuisine is based on premium quality products and creativity, working closely with the suppliers of all the ingredients used.
The drinks menu at Umiko, led by sommelier Ramón Romero, includes 100 wines, most from small producers from Spain and around the world, in addition to an exclusive section dedicated to sakes, with Ginjo-ka, Junmai, and Honjoso varieties, as well as other aromatic, sparkling, aged, and limited-edition offerings.
