From 1 to 6 September, the Artistic Metropol space will be hosting the twenty-second edition of one of Europe’s most important film festivals dedicated to films from Asia in general, and especially India, as well as from international guest countries.
The 2023 Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to Deepa Mehta, an Oscar-nominated Indo-Canadian filmmaker whose work is internationally recognised. Her films include The Elemental Trilogy: Earth, Fire and the Oscar nominee for Best Foreign Language Film, Water; Bollywood/Hollywood, Heaven on Earth and the epic adaptation of Midnight’s Children; Anatomy of Violence and, more recently, the award-winning Funny Boy.
One of the judges at this year’s festival is Mohsen Makhmalbaf (Tehran, Iran, 1957), an Iranian film maker, writer, screenwriter, producer and human rights activist. President of the Asian Film Academy since 2009, he founded the Makhmalbaf Film House alternative film school in Tehran in 1996.
In addition to the Official Section showing all the feature films, short films and documentaries competing for the awards, the Classics section is also returning, along with Portugal, which has become a fixture at the festival; Save Afghanistan; Special Screenings, which this year features the Israeli film Asia; Migrations; Love, offering many different points of view; Lives; Nature; Gypsy films; and Film Schools, in which the Moscow Film School (Russia), Sam Spiegel Film School (Israel) and Ecam (Spain) will be participating this year.
