European Music Day is on 21 June, coinciding with the Summer Solstice. It seeks to foster cultural exchange through music. Madrid hosts it every year with extraordinary concerts and musical activities of all styles and genres. From 19 to 21 June, eight concerts can be seen in Plaza Matadero and two morning music sessions for families in the Columns Hall at the Design Centre.
DEMM (European Music Day at Matadero) is one of the few events that has become a classic in the programme of the contemporary creation centre, Matadero Madrid. It was first held in 2009 and has become a stage for the Indie scene over the past 17 years, as well as a space for the consolidation of national and international groups, new genres and musical tendencies.
In the 2026 edition, DEMM’s line-up will feature big names from Indie rock and electronic music, such as pablopablo, Maria Arnal, Depresión Sonora, Alizzz, Ángeles Toledano, Rita Payés and Lucía Fumero, Gazzi and Akazie.
The first day, 19 June, will feature the avant-garde audiovisual show by Maria Arnal, who will present her first solo album, AMA, in a show full of imagination and spectacularity. Ángeles Toledano, an essential voice in contemporary flamenco will also be on stage, presenting her full-length debut, Sangre Sucia, released in September 2025. On the same day, the trombonist Rita Payés and the pianist Lucía Fumero will be on stage, presenting their fusion between folklore and jazz in a show that will be premièred in Madrid. The first day will be rounded off with Gazzi’s DJ set.
Saturday 20 June will feature three key names from new pop. This is the case of the charismatic pablopablo (Pablo Drexler), one of the big newcomers in recent times, as can be seen in his album, Canciones en Mi. Alizzz (Cristian Quirante) will also be participating. Based on an irresistible post-modern pop, he has created songs that have been instant hits that move between contemporary pop, trap, electronic music and reggaeton. Depresión Sonora (Marcos Crespo) will also be present with his combination of irresistible dark-pop and post-punk, as well as DJ Akazie, one of the most solid figures on the national scene.
The festival also focuses on the educational and leisure aspects of music with special concerts for families. In this way, The Columns Hall at the Central de Diseño (Matadero) will host Le Parody on 20 and 21 June at 12 Noon, with a special performance for all ages, showing that there is a place for risk and experimentation in family entertainment; and La Fantástica Banda, with a repertoire designed especially for families.
In this way, DEMM is presented as a music festival for all, young and old alike, with no discrimination based on gender, helping to understand the new direction of the music scene.
