La Taberna del Alabardero, founded in 1974 by Don Luis de Lezama and located in the area known as Madrid de los Austrias, takes its name from the Compañía de los Alabarderos, the members of the Royal Guard in charge of protecting the Reales Alcázares.
The tables of the tavern, opened in 1974 by the hand of Don Luis de Lezama, have borne witness to long literary conversations. Specifically, table 11 was present at long talks between Generation 27 writer José Bergamín and legendary personalities like Cortázar, Aleixandre, Alberti, Ernesto Jiménez Caballero, Gabriel Celaya and others who spoke about Juan Ramón Jiménez as an old pal. Politicians, like the then “Isidoro”, today Felipe González, Adolfo Suárez and Fraga in audiences with the King on his visits to the tavern, created part of the history of the Spanish transition to democracy.
As for its gastronomy, if there is one thing that characterises this traditional Basque cuisine restaurant, it is flavour, tradition and dishes based on seasonal produce, thanks to the fact that it has its own vegetable garden in Aranjuez, and every day it receives the fruit and vegetables that are the stars of its menu. A cuisine worked in detail that highlights the value of Spanish gastronomy with recipes from yesterday and today.
