The Polish director and playwright, Anna Augustynowicz will première in Spain a drama that addresses the experience of bringing up a neurodivergent daughter whilst posing a reflection on the response of society to diversity on 7 and 8 November in the Sala Verde at Teatros del Canal as part of the Autumn Festival. The show will be performed in Polish with Spanish subtitles. The show uses visual and sound stimuli that may be disturbing.
The show follows a new mother and her daughter on a journey marked by prejudices and comprehension difficulties, but also on building their own bond. Based on this relationship, the production opens up a space for debate on the role of educational and healthcare institutions and the mechanisms with which society accompanies or conditions neurodivergent families. Personal experience becomes the starting point for a broader look at inclusion, care and the structures around upbringing.
The production is a theatre adaptation of the book by the journalist, Eliza Kącka. The autobiographical literary work portrays the process of bringing up an autistic child and serves as a proposal that combines the personal dimension of the family experience and a reflection on social scope. Anna Augustynowicz is the director of the Współczesny Theatre in Szczecin and has won the Polityka Passport Award, one of the leading cultural awards in Poland, as well as the Zygmunt Hübner Award, which recognises not only artistic achievement but also an understanding of theatre as a cultural and social service.
