XXXIII Lied Concert Series - Christiane Karg

The National Centre for Musical Diffusion (CNDM) is opening a new season of its Lied Concert Series on 6 October at the Teatro de la Zarzuela. This recital features the soprano Christiane Karg and the pianist Malcolm Martineau, presenting Jugendstil Lieder / Belle Époque, a programme based on the concert songs of the early years of the 20th century.  

In a period marked by post-romanticism and the new artistic movements, the pieces by Amy Beach, Debussy, Berg, Alma and Gustav Mahler and Richard Strauss faithfully reflected the diverse paths followed by lied and melody around 1900. This recital explores the different ways of understanding the relationship between poetry and music, offering an overview of a decisive moment in the evolution of the European vocal repertoire. 

The German opera soprano, Christiane Karg, made her debut at the Salzburg Festival 2006 as Melia in Mozart’s Apollo et Hyacinthus and as The World Spirit in Mozart's Die Schuldigkeit des ersten Gebotes.  In 2007, she appeared there as Madame Silberklang in Der Schauspieldirektor and the title role in Bastien und Bastienne.

Throughout her career, she has been a member of the Frankfurt Opera, performing in Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro, Puccini’s La Bohème or Strauss’ The Knight of the Rose. She made her debut at the Royal Opera House in 2015 as Pamina in The Magic Flute by Mozart.

She has performed as solo soprano in Mahler's Second Symphony in a performance at the Rheingau Musik Festival 2017 in Eberbach Abbey, conducted by Christoph Eschenbach, with Gerhild Romberger, the SWR Vokalensemble, the Bavarian Radio Chorus  and the SWR Symphony Orchestra.
