As part of the Canal Baila concert series, José Ángel Capel will première a dance and flamenco show that explores the origins of song in popular Spanish tradition on 3 and 4 November in the Sala Negra at Teatros del Canal. The performance includes smoke effects.
The production arises from research on singing in dance and flamenco, particularly that related to collective performances and the aubades performed by groups of men. Based on this legacy, Capel builds a stage language that brings together movement and vocals to recover the social and symbolic dimensions of these art forms.
The flamenco dancer invites spectators on a journey through a space in which music, dance and song merge to transform night into a collective ritual and dawn into a shared experience of memory, presence and identity.
The production explores singing as a functional and expressive tool, used to accompany physical exertion, set the work pace and strengthen the ties among those who shared tasks in tough conditions. From this perspective, the performance shows how these vocal practices went beyond their initial purpose to become cultural and artistic expressions.
The production focuses on the moment when song and the body cease to respond merely to a practical need in order to shape celebrations, rituals and meeting places. The piece celebrates the memory of these traditions and their ability to create community, turning the stage into a place where past and present enter into dialogue through dance and vocals.
José Ángel Capel is a dancer who began his dance studies at the Professional Dance Conservatory in Malaga and completed them at the Mariemma Royal Professional Dance Conservatory in Madrid. He went on to join the Spanish Ballet of Murcia and the Aída Gómez Company. He continued his professional career as a dancer at Teatro de la Zarzuela, the Rojas y Rodríguez New Spanish Ballet or the Nova Galega Dance Company, led by Jaime Pablo Díaz. As a flamenco dancer, he was a performer in the Antonio Gades Company in 2017 and the María Pagés Company in 2019, whereby he still performs with both companies at major dance festivals.
