Manuel Canseco premières the adaptation of Electra by Juan Guerrero Zamora in the Community of Madrid, turning the myth into an Andalusian country house, in the Concha Velasco Red Hall at Teatros del Canal from 5 to 18 September.
Inspired by the different versions of Electra by the three great Greek tragedians, Guerrero Zamora creates a reinterpretation of the legend that maintains the essential elements of the classical text while revisiting them with a theatrical language deeply rooted in Andalusian tradition.
One of the most outstanding characteristics is the Ibérica de Danza Choir, which is made up of male and female dancers, whose very presence amplifies the story’s dramatic dimension. Cassandra, who intervenes with her songs at decisive moments, adds to this drama, along with the symbolic prominence of the blind man who accompanies her. This dreamlike universe is rounded off with the popular and, at times, mocking defender of the people, played by Aya.
The plot is based on one of the darkest episodes in Greek mythology: the murder of King Agamemnon by his wife, Clytemnestra, and her lover, Aegisthus, when the monarch returns victorious from the Trojan War.
Years later, the king’s daughter, Electra, is consumed by grief and the desire to seek revenge for her father’s death. Withstanding the humiliation inflicted on her by Clytemnestra and Aegisthus, she awaits the return of her brother, Orestes, who was sent away from the kingdom as a child to save his life. When Orestes secretly returns to Mycenae, the brother and sister plot together and take their revenge.
The result is a powerful theatrical performance, in which the dramatic action is firmly supported by song and dance, integrated organically in the unfolding of the tragedy and reinforcing the emotional intensity and expressive wealth.
