On 17 and 18 September in the Black Hall at Teatros del Canal, the Chinese dancer, Chun Zhang will be premièring a dance show that combines choreography, sound and theatre visual spaces to build a universe in which movement becomes a vehicle for transformation and reflection.
The piece is based on krabi krabong, the Thai martial art using double sticks, and turns it into a contemporary choreographic language that goes beyond technique in order to address questions, such as identity, resilience and female empowerment.
The production raises a central question which guides the entire stage performance: how can the body continue dancing through rupture, expressing strength, confidence and resistance without renouncing tenderness or the possibility of shared transformation? Based on this premise, the show explores movement as a meeting point between vulnerability and strength. With this approach, the production defends dance as a language capable of laying bridges between cultures and turning individual experience into a shared creative force.
Born in 1988 in Shanghai (China), Chun Zhang is a choreographer, director, dancer and founder of the Yibu Company. Winner of the Kurt Jooss Prize in 2019, she has developed an international career marked by dialogue between different cultures and artistic disciplines.
She began her career as a dancer at the age of 15, touring Europe, Africa and Asia with companies linked to the Shanghai Culture Bureau the Peking Dance Academy. In 2011, she began her choreographic career while teaching at the Macao Conservatory and four years later, she moved to Germany to study Choreography at Folkwang University of the Arts, where she began her career as an independent artist.
Her training combines Chinese classical and folk dance, ballet and the influence of the German Tanztheater, as well as disciplines, such as the Laban/Bartenieff studies of movement, Pilates, Qigong, traditional Chinese medicine and meditation. In her creations, Zhang sees choreography as a tool to explore new forms of existence through movement, characterised by a great emotional intensity and aesthetics that combine simplicity with richness and expressive complexity.
