The Brazilian flamenco dancer, Gabriel Matías, will première a flamenco show based on his own life experience in the Black Hall at Teatros del Canal on 3 and 4 September. Designed as an autobiographical monologue, the show explores the artistic calling as a force capable of transforming the way the world is conceived and the body is inhabited. It explores the commitment and challenges involved in flamenco.
Through a narrative in the first-person, Matías relives the journey that took him from Brazil to Spain to delve further into the art of flamenco. The performance reflects on the discipline, memory, demands and passion that accompany a performer’s training process, turning dance into an act of absolute devotion and deep personal conviction.
It is set in a dance studio, an intimate space where the solitude of rehearsals turns into a journey of discovery, resistance and growth. There, the creator reveals the silent work that underpins each performance and praises the creative process as a space for learning, enjoyment and transformation.
Gabriel Matías is a Brazilian flamenco dancer and choreographer resident in Spain. Specialised in flamenco, he began his career in Brazil before moving to Madrid in 2015 to study flamenco at the María de Ávila Higher Dance Conservatory, where he obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Dance, specialising in Flamenco Dance Pedagogy.
In 2020, he premièred his first show, Ellos, followed by Claroscuro (2021), for which he won the Outstanding Dancer Prize at the 30th Spanish Dance and Flamenco Choreography Competition in Madrid. Furthermore, he has organised an annual tour of classes and performances around different cities in Brazil since 2017.
