On 22 and 23 September, choreographer Javier Martín presents his new production in the Sala Negra auditorium of Teatros del Canal that combines contemporary dance and an audiovisual installation to explore the states of sleep and the complex relationship between the body, the imagination and time. The production features strobe lights and smoke.
Conceived as a dance solo, the production invites the audience to ask themselves who is really dreaming and what role objects and the environment play in shaping our reality. Through its dreamlike staging, the performance explores the physicality of the wind and dreams as realms where the body continues to engage with the world even when consciousness seems to fade.
The piece incorporates the recording and live projection of movement, blending dance with audiovisual language to create an immersive space in which the perception of time and physical presence are constantly transformed. The result is an experience that blurs the boundaries between the real and the imagined, between the physical body and its projected reflection.
Inspired by the reflections of thinkers and writers such as Theodor W. Adorno and Charles Bukowski, the piece suggests that our connection with reality does not disappear whilst we sleep, but continues to manifest itself on vegetative and subconscious levels. Building on this premise, the project proposes a performance-based exploration of bodily memory, perception and the transitional states between wakefulness and sleep.
Born in La Coruña, Javier Martín is a Spanish choreographer, dancer and researcher whose career has focused on contemporary dance and research into the body. His work is characterised by a dialogue between choreography, philosophy, science and the visual arts, creating productions that challenge our perception, materiality and the cognitive processes of movement.
He has created and presented more than 30 works, including Beltenebros (2025), El punto impropio A/S/V (2023), Figuras del umbral (2021), Teorema (2020), SOMA (2019) and Método negro (2018), performing in Spain, France, Portugal, Morocco, Ukraine, Russia, Mexico, Uruguay, Guatemala, Colombia and Thailand.
