What is considered to be the last great opera of Italian romanticism, composed by Amilcare Ponchielli, is coming to the Teatro Real on 31 March and 3 April 2027, conducted by the maestro, Marco Armiliato. He will be at the helm of this concerto version along with the acclaimed soprano, Anna Netrebko in the title role, with Luca Salsi, Yusif Eyvazov, Eve-Maude Hubeaux, Lucile Richardot or Simon Lim, among others.
Alongside Netrebko, the cast brings together leading performers from today’s lyrical scene, such as Luca Salsi, Yusif Eyvazov, Eve-Maude Hubeaux, Lucile Richardot and Simon Lim, in a performance that is set to bring this opera with its immense vocal and dramatic intensity back to the forefront. The production is in Italian with English and Spanish subtitles.
Set in 17th-century Venice, the piece traces a dark history of jealousy, betrayal and revenge. Barnaba is at the centre of the drama, an Inquisition spy who is obsessed with Gioconda (a street singer who rejects his love) and comes up with a plan to destroy her. His first manoeuvre consists of accusing the Blind Woman, the main character’s old mother, of witchcraft, leading to the fury of the town. However, the intervention of Laura, the wife of Inquisitor Alvise, saves the woman and triggers an unexpected reunion with Enzo, Laura’s former lover and Gioconda’s fiancé.
From this moment, the drama plummets toward a tragic conclusion in which Enzo must choose between two loves, while Gioconda is caught in a spiral of sacrifice and pain that will lead her to a devastating end. Therefore, one of the great gems of the Italian repertoire is brought back to life in an evening that brings together vocal virtuosity and stage passion focusing on one of the most intense heroines of 19th century opera.
