From 10 October to 9 November, Colectivo Las Huecas will be performing a new play in the Sala Francisco Nieva auditorium of Teatro Valle-Inclán, combining tragicomedy, psychological horror-thriller and political satire to reflect on the rise of reactionary movements in Europe. The show is performed in English and other languages with subtitles in Spanish.
The action takes place in the waiting room of a convention of European far-right leaders, where the characters are inexplicably trapped. From there, a corrosive humour (treated as an implacable force) drags them towards degradation, ridicule and ultimately, self-destruction.
This production responds to the current reactionary surge in Europe and the West, as well as the normalisation of ultraconservative, racist, Islamophobic, misogynistic and technofeudalist discourses. To counter this ideological offensive, Las Huecas are reclaiming theatre as a tool of cultural resistance and humour as an antifascist and antidogmatic weapon.
To shape this proposal, the group uses a visually distorted theatricality that blends the codes of comedy and psychological horror. A technique called direct meta clowning, a comedic exercise that fragments the mask, uses degraded parody, explores the grotesque body and embraces surrealistic caricature. The result is an uncomfortable, provocative and visually powerful spectacle that seeks to make people laugh and think at the same time.
Las Huecas is a theatre collective formed by Júlia Barbany, Núria Corominas and Andrea Pellejero back in 2016. With almost a decade of experience in festivals and independent venues, the group has cemented its own aesthetic and language, characterised by humour, parody and absurdity.
Their work is characterised by rotating leadership, where everyone takes turns in directing and creating, generating a hybrid style that combines contemporary European theatre with Catalan comedy and satire. Their productions include Aquellas que no han de morir and De l’amistat, winner of the 2025 TimeOut Award for Best Show.
