Juan Carlos Avecilla, one of the most promising figures in contemporary flamenco, will be performing a flamenco show at the Centro Danza Matadero - CDM on 22 and 23 October, which seeks to connect the audience with the most essential and primitive aspects of sound and life.
From the first cry upon birth to the last breath, the production provides a sensory journey through the sounds that mark our lives. This piece features two flamenco singers, Naike Ponce and Desiré Paredes, accompanied by the traditional percussion of Iván Mellén. It is an acoustic universe that is as complex and embracing as nature itself is recreated.
Far from ornamental music, the performance is created with voices that seek to express themselves: singing, whistling, demanding and pulsating like the earth itself. Its power lies in the nakedness of its elements and the depth of its proposal. It is an uncompromising production that transforms everyday noise into art and invites the audience to listen and see not with their ears and eyes, but with their whole body.
Born in Chiclana de la Frontera (Cadiz) in 1991, Juan Carlos Avecilla is one of the most promising names in contemporary Spanish dance. He studied Spanish Dance and Flamenco at the Cadiz Dance Conservatory and after his initial studies, he moved to Madrid to continue to evolve professionally alongside consolidated figures, such as Rocío Molina, Israel Galván, Manuel Liñán and Rafaela Carrasco. In 2015, he completed his training as a choreographer at the María de Ávila Higher Dance Conservatory.
Avecilla presented his first personal creation, Melómano in 2015 and he premièred Tic Tac Toe in 2016, which was nominated for the 2018 Max Awards for Best New Show. His career includes periods with renowned companies, such as those of Antonio Márquez, Javier Latorre and Antonio “El Pipa”, as well as performances at Madrid’s iconic flamenco houses, such as Corral de la Morería, Casa Patas or Villa Rosa.
Recognised for his choreographic talent, he won the Spanish National Ballet Award and First Prize for Solo Choreography at the Spanish Dance and Flamenco Competition in 2016. His third show, Creencias (2019), was nominated in three categories at the 2020 Max Awards. He currently combines his own projects with his participation in the María Pagés and Ángel Rojas companies.
