The choreographer, Goyo Montero will present a modern dance show inspired by Johann Sebastian Bach’s Goldberg Variations from 7 to 9 May in Nave 11 at the Centro Danza Matadero (CDM).
The show marks Montero’s return to the city of his birth, presenting his new company, the Staatsballett Hannover, an ensemble of 28 exceptional dancers who represent the energy and precision of his style.
Montero directs a piece that is immersed in the most intimate and universal territory of dance: human connection. Far from telling a story with a beginning and an end, it proposes an emotional and sensory journey through bodies.
It is a nocturnal diary in which dreams and nightmares are intertwined, where tenderness goes hand in hand with aggressiveness, vulnerability with fear and movement becomes the language of the soul.
The choreographer builds a soundscape that combines the mathematical perfection of Baroque music with the contemporary atmospheres of the Canadian composer, Owen Belton. The result is a musical tapestry in which each theme is transformed, dissolved and returned, reflecting the life cycle of movement. There are no heroes or characters, just a series of solos, duets and trios which act as counterpoints, in which rhythm, breathing and sight trace an invisible dialogue between the performers and the audience.
Born in Madrid in 1975, Goyo Montero initially trained at the Royal Dance Conservatory in Madrid and completed his training at the Cuban National Ballet School under the orders of Alicia Alonso. His career as a dancer began at the age of 17 with the English National Ballet and he went on to become a soloist with the Leipziger Ballett, the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden Ballet, the Royal Ballet of Flanders and lead soloist at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. From 2008 to 2025, he directed the Staatstheater Nürnberg Ballet, which he turned into an internationally renowned company. He has been awarded the National Dance Prize from the Spanish Ministry of Culture, among other recognitions.
