The Mapfre Foundation will host an exhibition that is the first major retrospective devoted to Raimundo de Madrazo, undoubtedly one of the most cosmopolitan and technically refined painters of his time, from 19 September to 18 January 2026 at the Sala Recoletos. This exhibition has been organised in collaboration with the Meadows Museum in Dallas.
As the third representative (behind his grandfather José and his father Federico) of the most renowned 19th-century Spanish painting dynasty, Raimundo de Madrazo developed his artistic career between Paris, where he went at the age of 20, and the United States, where he carried out various portrait tours from 1897 onwards as his role on the French art scene faded.
Raimundo de Madrazo's work revolves around genre painting and portraiture. In his early days, the artist stood out for the uniqueness of his interiors and his skills as a great colourist. As a portraitist, he was one of the favourite painters of Parisian and American high society.
