The new season at the Gran Teatro Pavón closes in style with the return of this hit musical, which is now coming to Madrid as a revival of Emilio Aragón's version directed by Antonio Banderas. As a classic of 1970s musical theatre with numerous Tony Award nominations, it can be seen from 21 January to 1 March, with performances from Tuesday to Sunday.
Directed by Antonio Banderas based on the version by Emilio Aragón, it is presented as Godspell, a New Passion and features a great cast, including Javier Ariano, Aaron Cobos, Andro Crespo, Paula Díaz, Ferran Fabá, Angy Fernández, Laia Prats, Roko, Estibalitz Ruiz, Hugo Ruiz, Ana Domínguez, Bella Exum, Raúl Ortiz and Alex Parra.
Originally conceived and directed by John-Michael Tebelak, with music and new lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, Godspell has become a classic on Broadway. Its story revolves around the Gospel of St Matthew and the experiences of a group of young people in a big city.
14 actors will appear on stage accompanied by a live band. Together they will bring to life a show that combines vaudeville, magic, shadows, masks and puppets throughout 16 musical numbers, including Prepare the Way, Day by Day or A Beautiful City.
The scene opens in a place that could well be a theatre warehouse as a run-down neighbourhood courtyard. The characters are seen there: a young theatre company, performing a play for the audience. At first sight, everything appears to be normal, but both the play and the context in which it takes place will prove that this is not the case. Through each character and their respective encounters with Jesus, the Gospels of the New Testament will be revisited, thus initiating a personal journey of no return.
