The Visitation by Jacopo Pontormo

From 8 May to 18 June, Room 49 in the Villanueva Building at the Prado Museum, in collaboration with the Friends of the Prado Museum Foundation, will be exhibiting this work by the Italian Renaissance painter, Jacopo Carucci (1494–1557), painted around 1528 and on loan from the San Michele Arcangelo Parish Church in Carmignano (Prato), Diocese of Pistoia, whereby it will be on display in Spain for the first time ever. 

This exhibition is a unique opportunity to see a key piece from Early Mannerism, which is rarely ever on display outside its place of origin.

The loan has been part of “The Invited Work” programme, sponsored by the Friends of the Prado Museum Foundation since 2010, which aims to enrich the visit and encourage comparative analysis with the Museum’s collections, as part of its collaboration policy with national and international institutions.

In 2026, this exchange takes on special meaning as L’Aquila is the “Italian Capital of Culture,” whereby the Prado will contribute to this celebration by lending The Visitation by Raphael.
