Following on from the success of the first and second editions, Madrid will once again host this jazz music festival in the autumn of 2023, in collaboration with the JazzMadrid International Festival part of Madrid City Council's Department of Culture, Tourism and Sport. This initiative will take place from 8 October to 30 November, with a wide-ranging programme spread across several venues in the city, with the Sala Villanos (formerly Sala Caracol) as the main venue. In this edition, artists such as Charles Lloyd, The Cookers, Stanley Clarke, Tigran Hamasyan, Ibrahim Maalouf, Corinne Bailey Rae or Martirio & Chano Domínguez will be performing on stage.
The festival’s name is inspired by “La Villa” of Madrid and the acceptance of villano as a neighbour or resident of the working class citizens of a village or hamlet, rather than the nobility. It seeks to bring everyone together and eliminate the music label for some elitists. The programme presents consolidated artists and new talent and Villanos del Jazz was created with the spirit of becoming a stable cycle.
Fusion jazz, flamenco jazz or Cuban jazz, but also bossa nova, folk, samba, tango or mestizaje, are some of the genres that are included in this festival and make up the programme of its third edition.
This year, the Sala Villanos (formerly Sala Caracol) will be the main venue, but other spaces, such as the Pavón Theatre will once again be one of the venues, along with Teatros del Canal, and other venues, such as La Riviera, La Paqui and Independance Club.
Leading figures on the music scene that will be featured in the 2023 edition include artists of national and international relevance. From Charles Lloyd to Queralt Lahoz, as well as The Cookers, John Grant, Tigran Hamasyan, Martirio & Chano Domínguez, Richard Bona Trio, Ibrahim Maalouf, Yamandú Costa, Billy Cobham, Theo Crocker, Maro, Moisés P. Sánchez, Matthew Halsall, Bebel Gilberto, Corinne Bailey Rae, Alfredo Rodriguez Quintet, Joao Donato, Dhafer Youssef, Azymuth, Ben L’Oncle Soul, Amaro Freitas, Iván Melón Lewis, Kassa Overall, Shai Maestro, The Cavemen and Antonio Lizana. They are all musicians of diverse origins, musical tonalities and different accents, with the common denominator being proven quality.
