Triana - Medea (BNE)

The Spanish National Ballet will be performing a double flamenco ballet session with Triana and Medea. This show in tribute to José Granero can be enjoyed  at the Teatro Zarzuela from 11 to 22 July from Tuesday to Sunday.

Triana is a celebration of the Andalusian essence that recreates the spirit of its author, José Granero. This is a choreographic evocation of the legendary neighbourhood in Seville that is the birthplace of bullfighters, flamenco singers and dancers. Through dance and music, it portrays the everyday life, art and passion that define the soul of Triana.

The ballet moves through its streets, courtyards and festivals, where the people express themselves with strength, pride and joy. The body movements are inspired by the purest flamenco combined with a contemporary perspective. As a whole, it becomes an ode to the Andalusian people, their popular culture and their spirit.

Medea is one of the great tragedies in the Spanish National Ballet’s repertoire, in which Greek myth combines with flamenco drama. Choreographed by José Granero, the story tells of the passion and fate of Medea, a sorceress who betrays her family and helps him obtain the Golden Fleece out of her love for Jason. When Jason leaves her to marry the daughter of King Creon, her love turns to hatred and revenge.

Through dance, Medea expresses the madness, humiliation and fury of a scorned woman who defies human and divine limits. Granero’s choreography turns the myth into a flamenco catharsis, in which movement, song and guitar playing turn the tragedy into pure emotion.
