Terraphilia. Beyond the human in the Thyssen-Bornemisza collections

The Terraphilia exhibition offers a reflection on the emotional and responsible connection with the Earth and its many forms of life Through around one hundred works from different periods and artistic traditions, the exhibition questions the anthropocentric vision and opens up a space for new ways of co-existence between different species. Organised in collaboration with TBA21–Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary, it will be on display at the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum from 1 July to 24 September.

Structured across seven interlinked scenarios, the exhibition addresses themes like cosmograms, animated worlds, the art of dreams, the relationship with the earth, oceanic cosmogonies and the mythologies of time.  Visitors are guided through these perspectives by different ways of imagining and experiencing the Earth, exploring approaches ranging from science to spirituality.

The term that gives its name to the exhibition, Terraphilia, combines Terra (Earth) with philia (love and friendship), hence expressing a deep-rooted connection of affection, care, and responsibility towards the Earth and its multitudes of inhabitants.

Beyond an art exhibition, Terraphilia positions itself as a reflection on today’s ecological crisis.  By integrating philosophical, anthropological and ethical discourses, it considers a critical vision of the impact of colonialism, the extraction of resources and environmental destruction while advocating for new ways of looking after the planet.
